Bank asking for money back

I'm hoping someone could offer some advice for my Aunt.

She had a joint account with her ex. They split up a few years ago and she requested to the bank that the account should be closed. The balance was zero.

She got a letter this morning saying that her ex has withdrawn £600 so the account is £600 overdrawn now. As the bank cannot trace him, they are chasing her for the money. It turns out that although she filled in a closure form, the ex did not so the account was never closed.

Where does my Aunt stand with this?

She is also worried in case the ex withdraws further money from the account and the bank chase her for this.

My Aunt also has no idea where the ex is now. It wasn't a very nice split and she doesn't want anything more to do with him.

She is equally and jointly liable for any debt on a joint account. So, if they bank cannot find him, they are within their rights to come after her for the money.

She should instruct the bank to block the account straight away to prevent any more money being withdrawn.

    Thanks for the help.

It just seems so unfair after she previously filled in a closure form at the time of the split, and assumed the account had been closed all this time.
