I wouldnt pay much more for a basic site, web designers have their own portfolio of templates (or ready made sites as you call them lol). If your able to choose something that has already been designed then it will be quite cheap. If your looking for a site to be designed from scratch incl. artwork and layout then it will be at a higher cost, it's just something else to weigh up i suppose
What you say is true, although I still think your cost estimate is too low. I am a web developer, by the way.
One impotant thing to remember is that you can have two websites that look exactly the same, but one is much better at being picked up by Google and other search engines. You don't need to buy in services from an SEO, your web designer should be able to build a nicely optimised site anyway.
The trouble with web design is that there are a LOT of people out there who don't do a professional job, and it's difficult for a non-expert to see that this is the case. Some of the sites I see make me wince!
Good luck with it, Horace, I'm sure you'll get the site you need.“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” - Lao Tzu

Im not sure I entirely agree with some of what is being said in here...
While I do agree that a lot of people make a lot of bad websites... it is not always the case.
E.G. There is a website called 50poundwebsite (.com I think) and they frequently run a promotion where they offer to build you a professional website from scratch, for £50. Two of my friends have used this service and our web designer friend says he can’t find fault with it. SEO friendly sites, picked up by Google etc, nicely coded, no mess and fast loading. From what I have seen... the designs aren’t bad either!
There is also a lot of website work which you can post to freelancer sites... and choose the price/developer that best suits you...
I think you can get a good website, for very little money, you just need to look in the right places!! Good Luck!0
