New Laptop - Internet?

I just got a new laptop today (Compaq F765) and I'm trying to connect to the internet with it. I have Virgin broadband, not wireless. So I'm plugging the blue ethernet cable into my laptop but nothing is working
When I go to the control panel to try set it up there it asks me for a username and password but I'm pretty sure I've never had one to connect to the net...
Anyone got any idea how to get online?

Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.

It's okay, I got it to work! Sitting on my couch typing this on my lovely new laptop
I phoned virgin and they helped me, I just had to turn the modem off and switch sides of the ethernet cable. Not sure why that worked but it did! Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.0 -

I hope that your impatience didn't cost you £1 per minute. The number to call is 0906 991 0001 and calls cost £1 per minute*.
If you post a techie question in the future, give as many details as you can and save your money. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
It was free, there's a three digit number that you can dial from virgin phones for free
But yes, impatience has always been my problem lol. Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.0
