it's very nice that you can afford the over priced stuff but the customers who come in for smart price uniforms are usually not in the position to buy the nicer stuff though i'm quite sure if they could then they would.
Really cheap stuff can be false economy though; i find that ASDA's polo shirts yellow really quickly, but Woolworths and BHS ones last much longer. I also find that the trousers from BHS don't go bobbly and need replacing as quickly as the TESCO/ASDA ones that only last my son a couple of months before i have to get rid.
Cheapest doesn't doesn't always mean the best buy, especially if you have to replace it all in November."On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." My hero, Mr Steer.0 -
I found Asda's polo shirts to be quite poor quality, they shrink after the first wash (even tho i washed on a cool wash) and just look old and scruffy quickly.
Also their skirts are odd sizes too....my daughter isn't an odd size but i have not found a skirt to fot her properly yet in Asda.
I get her uniform from Tesco and i can't fault them.... i usually get it all a year in advance (end of the summer holidays...i picked up this years uniform for about the quarter of the price it is now...polo shirts were 87p a pack for the better quality ones).0 -
I bought all this today for 3 of the kids. 50p polo shirts - which at that price I expect to shrink in the wash so bought larger sizes, £1.75 for a skirt which to be fair is a bit on the thin side but it will be worn with thick tights anyway. Girls legging type trousers were £2 each and nice - bought these last year from Asda for the same money and I was pleased with the quality. I didn't buy any jumpers but they were around the £3 mark - I cheated and raided the lost property box at the end of last term. It made up for the £26 per pair of Clarks fitted shoes that we bought x 3!
Oh, and they have PE kits too at reasonable prices - the plimsoles were only £1.50 each and pack of 2 plain t-shirts for PE were £1.50.
My kids are always clean, happy and smart. They do not need hundreds of pounds spent on uniform to look that way.0 -
I have tried Asda'a uniforms before in the past couple of years, and agree about the poor quality. The polo shirts do not wash well and look scruffy quickly. The trousers seem to wear through very quickly at the knees, and also tend to split at the crotch very easily. I would much prefer to pay a bit more for M&S, as it is just a false economy to buy uniform that will need replacing in no time at all.0

I buy M&S or Next. They generally last the year which works out cheaper in the long run. Some bits even got passed on.0

I have 5 kids to clothe, and made the mistake last years of going against my better judgement, and buying some bits from Asda for their uniforms. I certainly won't be bothering this time. As other posters have said BHS and M&S do there own versions which have dropped in price but actually last the school year. The girls school trousers from Asda bobbled quickly, lost their shape and made my daughters look as though I couldn't be bothered to clothe them properly. The white polos yellowed quickly and lost there shape, looked cheap and raggy in weeks. The sweatshirts should only be worn in an emergency (after the first wear) if their decent one is in the wash. I found the skirts and troiusers poor cuts, that did not hang well or flatter, neither did they come out of the wash well. In fact these garments generally look like they have been made by kids, and probably have.
We all need to cut our costs, but it is actually cost effective to get items that cost a little more but will last and look good far longer. I actually felt embarrassed when my daughter came out of school with an Asda sweatshirt and Trousers on, she looked very poor. We are poor but there is no need to make my kids look poor.
In the summer sales I started getting bits for next term, BHS had some skirts and dresses and trousers left over from last season, all half price. Next Clearance had some skirts and polo shirts for £2 (originally £7/£8), so if you hunt about you can find cheap decent uniform.
I have probably offended the hardcore Asda cheap uniform lovers, but my genuine experience of a range of garments has been appalling. (Tesco and Sainsburys aren't a whole lot better IMO.):starmod: I am not that savage :heartpuls But I am a Vixen :staradmin0 -
Considering most people I know buy school uniforms from Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys etc, most kids look the same. Never had the problems you have said apart from polo shirts shrinking, so I usually get those from somewhere other than Asda. I have not tried Asda uniform but, love BHS they are very good quality and value for money.
Tesco have a few deals on too, i have bought my son trousers from there before and was very impressed with the quality.
I have to face it all soon, dreading it already..0 -
I think that to a point it depends on the school and the size of the school. My kids (poor things) have been to 3 different schools in the last year (this one is for good!) and the girls' school are all very 'nicely' dressed. And you can see that it is not Asda, in fact there is not a single child that does not wear an £11 embroidered school jumper! My son is at a different school (much bigger) and his is far more relaxed. I also got several pairs of Ladybird trousers from Woolworths, which were reduced to £2, these are very good quality and wear well. Maybe I was particularly unlucky with Asda, but if I had to get stuff from a supermarket it would be Tesco.Considering most people I know buy school uniforms from Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys etc, most kids look the same.
