Wholesale Energy Prices
The recent sob story (sorry, statement) from Centrica quoted some interesting figures. Centrica said their wholesale cost for gas had gone up to 90.8p/therm and electricity had gone up to £85.58/MWh.
Converting the rather quaint measure of 1 Therm = 29.3071kWh, I calculate that 1kWh costs 3.1p wholesale. Now, my average retail price for gas is around 3.75p/kWh, so that's not an unreasonable markup.
However, the wholesale price of electricity works out at 8.558p/kWh, while I'm being asked to pay (on average) 15p/kWh, nearly double the markup. So presumably the electricity infrastructure is more expensive to maintain than the gas infrastructure.
Comments, anyone?
