It really is a postcode lottery, but as others have said your first port of call should be your GP.
It really is so unfair at times

I hope I'm not speaking out of turn but have you tried everything for the reversal?
My OH was in the same situation and had a reversal using standard procedures (on the NHS to the amazement of our GP). This failed. We then had another consulation and were recommended micro-surgery. We went private for this and, even though 'one side' had already been tried unsucessfully, they managed to reconnect both sides using this special technique. We found out some months later that he can now be called 'super sperm' (the consultants words, not ours!!).
If you've not heard about this, there might still be a chance!!
We will start trying in october - can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!
Best of luck, whatever happens xxxMy baby girl :kisses3: September 09 :heartsmil0 -
Hi JAM1376
My partner had his reversal about 6 years agoa dn typical man can't remember how they did it! We did look at this and couldn't get a good idea of the costs. Can you tell where your partner had his reversed and reoughly how much it cost?
Good luck with Super Sperm in October - I'm very jealous x0 -
Now you are asking! lol
It was a hospital in Nottingham, the name of which escapes me at the mo. I will have a look when I get home and let you know later/tomorrow. From memory it was about £2600 (yes I know but might be worth a try!).
It was the private hospital and the consultant was fantastic, explained everything really well etc. My OH had his vasectomy about 4 years before the reversal which did help matters (the sooner the better, thats why we had it done asap) but the hospital site had estimated sucess rates on it (or actual ones in some cases).
I'll try and look now and find the name or let you know later. Can get the name of the consultant too if you like but might have to pm that.
Bear with me.....Edit: Found it, have sent you a pm with the detailsMy baby girl :kisses3: September 09 :heartsmil0 -
Just to let you know that GPs that give IVF drugs when the NHS is not funding the full cost of the IVF treatment are on very dodgy ground and could be had up in breach of their contract and find themselves in front of the GMC.
The rule of thumb is that the NHS either pays for the whole treatment (inc drugs) or none at all."This is a forum - not a support group. We do not "owe" anyone unconditional acceptance of their opinions."0 -
Hi Magpie,
If you do go for the microsurgery you can also ask for some sperm to be extracted at the same time and frozen. Then if it doesn't work you can try for IVF/ICSI using the frozen sperm, which saves your DH from having a further op to extract sperm if that is the way you have to go.
My DH had the microsurgery almost 5 yrs ago and it worked well (cost about £2500 as I recall), but he's since developed 'antisperm antibodies' which can happen after a reversal - they basically attach themslevs to the 'tails' and stop the sperm swimming. I have PCOS as well so after trying I reckon every fertility treatment known to man, we are having ICSI. This is about £4k a time when you take into account all the drugs, consults, tests etc.
We don't get NHS help as DH has kids from previous marriage.
Luckily one side-effect of PCOS is that i over-respond to the treatment, so we had 3 viable embryos frozen after the last treatment.
If you want any info on the IVF / ICSI procedures, feel free to PM me.
There's also a TTC thread on this board which is really helpful.
Good luck!

Hi,
Magpie - I have sent you a PM
JAM1376 - Thank you so much! I needed to hear someone else went for it and it worked! All the best for October
Fairyelephant - lots of luck to you too.
Finding out DH's VR had failed (3 years after having the snip) hit us both quite hard - although we had an inclination that it hadn't worked  DH was scouring the net looking for info and then found info on the microsurgery route - having seen the surgeon and how confident he seems - we don't want to get excited again, but hope is a wonderful thing! Roll on December...
I also apologise for the blatant bump to this thread - but I wanted to reply to Magpie at the time but couldn't step off the emotional rollercoaster we were on
that's another job off my mammoth list!

Fingers crossed for everybody in the same situation!!!!
PS I don't know where you are having it done but if ya want any info and you think I could help, just let me know/PM me xxxMy baby girl :kisses3: September 09 :heartsmil0
