How to login to a server via SSH from anywhere?

I am trying to figure out the best way to login to a server via SSH from anywhere in the world (using, internet cafes, mobile phone etc,) however the server has a firewall and only permits named IPs through.

I heard there are online services whereby you login to, and form there on you can surf with your preassigned IP address (that is always yours therefore you can permit it through the firewall)

Any ideas? or advice?

Thanks

Sounds like you're trying to get round some network security that is there for a reason. SysAdmins are not ususally obstructive for no good reason!!

If possible I would recommend SSH'ing into a machine which is on the pre-approved IP address list and log into the server from there.
  • Thanks for your contribution mrscruffy, it's exactly what I am saying!

I think that a reputable online service would be easier and more reliable than a PC at home/office.

    Can anyone help?

Rent a shell for a couple of pounds a month, get that IP added, and ssh into the system from there.

I have shells from http://www.yichosting.co.uk and they're ludicrously stable. Their cheapest package is £3 a month but that's for 5 processes - probably way more than you need. If you email them they'll do you a custom package.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it
  • Thanks for that, very useful post! :)
How do I go about setting this up? I know nothing about shells... is there a guide for all this?
    Thanks again

The shell will be setup for you, all you'd have to do was ssh into it, the same as you would ssh into work. I've no idea how you'd ssh into another system from a shell mind you. I'm sure there'll be a linux guy drops by sooner or later.
