Error message- Direct X 9.OC compatible graphics adapters

Hi,

My SIL asked me to have a look at her pc as they were having major problems with getting games to load, using media player, itunes to mp3 player especially. I'm not techie at all with things like this, but agreed to see what it was doing - or not doing as the case is in reality!

They have Windows XP with AVG anti virus and adaware, but I've forgotten which firewall they use. (I know it isn't macaffee or norton though.)

My niece is fanatical about the Sims 2 game so I tried this to see what was happening. Each time I loaded the disc and clicked to play, it began loading and then stopped and this error message popped up:

"failed to find any Direct X 9.0C compatible graphics adapters in this system! Please make sure you have a Direct X 9.0C compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest drivers provided by the manufacturer. The application will terminate."

I understand what Direct X is, but haven't a clue about the "compatible graphics adapters" apart from figuring drivers for it have been deleted or something like that. I tried installing the Direct X from the Sims disc to appease my niece that I was trying to do something although as expected, it made no difference. (she has behavioural difficulties.)

SIL later explained that she'd let a neighbour do some things on it and it hadn't been right since then but doesn't know exactly what was done. They bought the pc from pc world just under 2 years ago but do not have recovery or OS discs so I cannot do a repair or re-install if that's the only solution for them. (I thought all new pc's were sold with some kind of OS disc these days?)

Can anyone explain what it all means and if there is a way to resolve it please?

You'll need to install the correct drivers for the graphics card. To find out which card it is, run GPU-Z then go to the manufacturers website and download the drivers from there.

    Click on Start.
    Click on Run...
    Type dxdiag into the box.
    Click OK.
    Click on the Display tab.
    Find the DirectX Features box.
The first feature is DirectDraw Acceleration. It should say Enabled next to it. If it says Disabled, click the Enable button.
The second feature is Direct3D Acceleration. It should say Enabled next to it. If it says Disabled, click the Enable button.
The third feature is AGP Texture Acceleration. It should say Enabled next to it. If it says Disabled, click the Enable button.
Once all three are enabled, close the window
