Quote: £2130
* Remove bath, sink, toilet and radiator.
* Remove old shower
* Drain central heating, so radiator can be taken out
* Install towel rail radiator on opposite side of room
* Re-fill central heating system and bleed radiators.
* Fit bath where sink was, and sink where bath was.
* Fit toilet in same place
* Fit shower in wall
* Tile walls (20sq m)
* Tile floor (5sq m)
* Box in soil pipe and waste and tile
* Skip hire
This includes everything except bath, sink, toilet, taps, shower, radiator, and tiles.
So far my fittings are adding up to £1300 + £600 (this would include a 25% off discount that the tiler has at topps tiles) for tiles.
Location is Surrey/Hampshire border.
I've been having a dilemma about whether to do some of the work (maybe tiling) ourselves, £4k is nearly half our budget. Is there any area I can save on?
Oh, we have another plumber coming on Tuesday to do a quote too.

Thanks andrew. Given what you said then, the quote is probably OK. So now I'm back to the idea of a DIY bathroom. We just can't justify spending £4k on a bathroom. It's only our first house and not a lifetime home.
We're even thinking of putting it on hold longer now and maybe decorating the living room first so at least we have somewhere comfy to chill out in.
Also by putting on hold this could give us time to get lucky and find some bargains on ebay and even in the shops. We're going to look round the shops still this weekend so we know what we want, then I can start trawling the websites and looking out for bargains at tile shops for end of line products.
I'm not confident enough to let hubby try the plumbing, but I think its a good idea to think about stripping the bathroom down to just leaving the toilet prior to it being fitted. I will ask the next quote based on that. And also getting rid of the rubbish ourselves.0 -
just putting it on hold does sound ok, but dont forget that wages, fuel, materials, will all rise so not always a good thing to do.maybe if you have got the cash and a good price for fitting get it done while you can and save the decorating for a rainy day when cash might be tight.0

Valid point thank you. It all comes down to prioritising. The problem is, the house we are living in has no paint/wallpaper/carpet/holes in walls and a rubbish bathroom. Basically each room was started and never finished by the previous owners. It's hard to make the decision as to what to do first and we keep changing our minds.0 -
Are you thinking of tiling all the walls? If so, you could save by only tiling area around bath/shower and behind sink/toilet. This will cut down on tiles as well as tiler costs. In ours I think painting the wall opposite the bath and decorating it with a fancy mirror adds to the decor. Definitely try to look on ebay etc for bargain fittings. We are in a rush to get ours done before we move in so we bought our stuff from bathstore, but did have a quick look on ebay and saw people getting some real bargains for new stuff.0

This was me four years ago. The house and garden look lovely now.... but the bathroom is still waiting.... :-)I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
We are doing DIY too.Our bathroom included putting in a brand new floor as the joists had rotted and it collapsed.We were quoted about £7k just for the floor joists and damp treatment which we couldnt afford.Hubby has done it himself,it has taken nearly 2 years,and we are ready to fit the bathroom suite now.I got a lovely roll top bath from ebay for just over £200,think the seller was called trueshopping .Hubby is good at tiling but to save money I am using wallpaper on one wall which I will varnish and just painting the rest.
With all the new click to fit plumbing bits and bendy pipes you can buy now who needs a plumber?Its easier than it ever has been to do it yourself.
As far as your quote goes,its much cheaper than any we have had but more expensive than work my in-laws had done.They had a new suite and power shower installed for £300.Everything was put in the same place as the previous suite so that made it a bit cheaper.The tiling,they bought the tiles themselves and a guy did it for £100."Reaching out to touch the stars dont forget the flowers at your feet".0
