Help: Norton has me stumped

I've spent a few hours today trying to help with a friend's computer problems and in desperation have even tried emailing Symantec. Meanwhile I was wondering if anyone had had this problem or similar when doing a Norton upgrade.

My friend has NIS 2005 on the PC and the 12 month subscription had run out. Rather than go for a subscription she decided on an upgrade . She bought NAV 2006( since you only need virus updates) and duly installed activated and registered it. Now she has 366 days of support according to the main screen.

But if you run live update when it attempts to synchonise with the server it still says the subscription is out of date.
I've reinstalled NAV2006 and updated LU to no avail. The problem seems to be that the old 2005NIS has not been overwitten, as both programs are still there. Or else the lesser product which has been bought is just incompatable with the old one.
I suppose a last resort would be to uninstall NIS2005 completely, but this would delete the paid for firewall.

Anyone have any ideas?

maybe do the complete uninstall routine with all the special norton removal tools then reinstall NAV2006 - could be that it's reading an old reg key?

(just as an aside - is it just me or does it speak volumes to anyone else that norton actually provides seperate programs to uninstall their software in addition to all the normal stuff??? i'll get my coat.)

Thanks smcicr, looks like Norton thinks the same, my friend has sent me their response and they also say do a complete uninstall of everything Norton!
Funny that you need special tools to get rid of all the program remnants, mind you on the forums Symantec are as popular as bird flu.

So we will lose the firewall part of the old 2005NIS, should I suggest Zone Alarm free or Sygate?

    Cheers.

Now I see that Sygate has been bought by Symantec........Wonder how long they will be doing free firewalls now?

I don't understand how you thought you could just install a new AV and carry on using the old FW with no subscription. Norton LU updates the FW aswell as the AV.
