Trouble cancelling a credit card

I can't believe the trouble I've just had in cancelling my account with Barclaycard. After finishing my 0% introductory offer and transferring the outstanding balance to another card I requested that they cancel my card. Their very polite operator seemed very reluctant to do this as "your credit rating is excellent sir, one of the best I've seen sir, maybe we should just reduce the amount of credit in case you decide you need the account sir". "No thank you please cancel the account as requested". That was a month ago.
Today I decided to double check that this had been done and suprise suprise (where's Cilla when you need her) it had not! So I politely requested they do so, only to be met with the same old speech with an added "but what if you need the account in, say 4 years". It took 5 minutes of increasing annoyance to finally achieve my aim which included me being called "strange", "I don't understand your thinking sir"
All of this took place not 5 minutes after being offered identity fraud protection by their insurance department "because you never know who can get access to your card details".

Perhaps better to do it in writing?...
"...please log on to My Account - Contact Us and send your email through the secure site..."

Then, when they've failed to carry out your request for a third time, you have something to take to the complaints department at...

I always keep all the correspondence sent by the credit card firms and when I no longer need the card I always write to cancel it. It usually takes a couple of weeks but I have never had any problems. I have just cancelled four cards, Halifax, Virgin, American Express and Barclaycard (second card I have cancelled with Barclaycard) I always get sent a letter of confirmation but no begging letters asking me to go back. I have just three left, one with egg with no balance which I might keep because of the anniversary 0% deal, one with Abbey that has a few months 0% to run which I used to balance transfer my wife's car insurance and also my younger daughter's car insurance onto so they can enjoy 0% for 9 months, and one with Goldfish which I used to pay off my eldest daughter's store card debt onto and when I get the bill will transfer to a new card and then cancel Goldfish. In writing off course .
Just need to pay off the mortgage now!0 -
I had the same with Barclaycard too - they were quite pushy about it. Capital One did the same too. I'd just ask to cancel again and ask for confirmation in the post too. Or you could do it in writing.0

Today we cancelled our mint card as it was no longer needed had transferred the balance onto another card a few months ago.
We had the same thing asking why blah blah blah! Took about 5 mins to get through that we were actually cancelling.
None of their business why it has a nil balance and we were cancelling it.
Had a laugh they then offered a special deal of 7% . Pity it was hubby that had to cancel as he is the first cardholder as I would have fallen about the floor laughing.I have never met a calorie yet I didn't like!!0
