Where can a get a cheap Golf TDI Mk 5 ?
Since March I have been looking to replace my car which has and still is falling to bits.
I have been looking at VW Golfs, the Mk5 GT TDI models.
But they are so expensive !
The cheapest "TDI" I have seen was £10k, but that had 50k+ on the clock and was over 4 years old !
Most seem to "start" from at least £11k to £12k, again for a 3 or 4 year old car with 30k on the clock.
I have been looking on the internet at places like Autotrader and Car Giant etc.
Does anyone know if there are better places to look ?
I thought that with the price of fuel, utility bills and food going up and falling house prices that the price of cars would be drop alot.
But since looking from March I have not noticed this.
My current car (Peugeot 306) has been extremely unreliable and is in very poor condition.
Ive given up trying to fix the problems because as soon as I fix one problem another 2 occur.
The repair costs are far far greater than what the car is worth (estimated value of car is £500, if that).
This is why I was looking at VW, because they are more reliable and better build quality, especially compared to Peugeots !

Golfs are never cheap because they are popular. Most people "think" that they are uber reliable when they are nothing more than average for reliability. Everyone is thinking the same way you are and wanting a diesel hatch.
The only way to get one cheaply would be to purchase from auction (along with all the associated risks). If you can afford £10k for a Golf you should maybe look at other alternatives. The man without a signature.0 -
Can you wait a month? The new reg comes out on 1st September, so there should be more available in the run up. I sold my Golf GT TDI in march, 13K on the clock, 55 plate, good spec, great condition for £11,500.
You have to be patient. Keep looking on Autotrader and you should find a decent one.(".)0 -
autoquake.com, i myself have bought a (mk4) golf from them beforeNamed after my cat, picture coming shortly0

Why not consider an alternative from the VW family? Seat Leons and Skoda Octavias share the same basic engines etc and might be a little cheaper (although admittedly perhaps not as stylish!).0

Spot on. My mate is a general manger of a well known motor branch and he tells me that there is a never-ending conveyor belt of VW Golfs in getting fixed for one thing or another.0 -
I've had or experienced ownership of several. all were faulty to a degree.
unlike their japanese equivalent.
I suppose there are calculations about residuals, german against japanese, but I bet you could get a decent civic for that price, which would in theory give you much better motoring for your money.Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?0 -
There is a Car Supermarket at Gatwick doing very good deals on nearly new cars, they are especially good on the part exchange price,
they give you a part exchange price, and then give you the next 14 days to try and sell it privately, or auction / ebay, sell it to a mate ect. but if you cant get sold for any more you have their price as a fall back guarantee.. Brilliant idea, at last a dealer that isnt tring to rip you off.

Jefferies Farm are poor at best, mostly imports that cause more hassle than the saving, and you dont get good part-ex prices!
Back to the OP ~ the new mk6 Golf comes out in the new year, so mk5 prices will have to drop by then. May be worth waiting just a little longer if you've not already bought something?!:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things.
