gas or electric cheapest

Does anyone know how to work out whether it would be cheaper to use the gas boiler or the electric immersion heater for my hot water ? I am with E-on for both. I know it used to always be gas that was cheapest but now I am not so sure with it having gone up so much lately.
Thanks

Gas is still cheaper. Even with the latest price rise, say 4p per kWh for gas compared to say 12p electricity. How much do you pay?

My gas bill is over double my electricity bill - is that normal?!

I don't use heating/hot water in any major amounts - so confused that everyone is saying that electricity is the expensive one.

That's an oversimplified way of looking at it, of course. You have to look at the efficiency of whatever you're doing via each method.

@ chinbergs - if your gas is double the electricity bill, there's either something wrong or you hardly use any electricity at all and your gas usage is normal.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

Electricity is much more expensive per kWh than gas.

Obviously, but unless a cheap rate electricity tariff is used, gas is definitely cheaper. You can use your immersion if you want, I'll continue to use my gas boiler to heat my hot water.

To quote you again "that is an oversimplified way of looking at it";)

Gas consumption is largely a function of heating a property. So a large and/or badly insulated house might cost a great deal to heat.

I have a well insulated large house and my gas bill(in £££££s) is double my electricity bill; and at approx 5,000kWh pa I certainly don't use "hardly any electricity at all"

My gas bill is twice my electricity bill too:

    Gas £20
    Elec £10

Av. daily usage last week - Gas 9.78 kWh, Elec 3.15 kWh

So whether you have high or low usage this looks like its a common trend.

Thanks for your responses :) They made me feel better.

My electricity was on DD for 20/m and the final bill was in credit. They automatically changed my gas DD to 50/m and the final bill, even with increased payments, was at £119. I'm confused!

Now that I've moved flat I've started both off at 20/m again and I'll see how things go... maybe the last flat was dodgy. I try to be environmentally conscious so it's not like I'm leaving anything on or have the heating on unnecessarily.
