PC/IP Addressing Problem

Have 3Com Wireles router with 2 PCs each with Linksys PCI card and laptop with 3Com wireless card.
PCs and Lappy all have static IP address.
Every now and again, the PC cant connect as its IP address has disappeared ie 0.0.0.0 - I get yellow dots on the Wireless icon in the tray.
I moved to static IP as I thought this would remove the same problem under DHCP.....it happens less frequently now.
I fixed it by adding one to the IP address and clicking OK!!! I then subtracted one, clicked OK and it was still OK.
Thoughts as to a permanent fix?

start, run, type cmd, type ipconfig /all
Will show whats running
Also netstat -a will show a list of network stuff running
Quick dirty fix:- start, run, cmd, ipconfig /release, when it comes back. ipconfig /renew
How have you configured it? Through microshaft or through the software that came with your router?

This will refresh the connection and should allow you to log back on.0 -
It was by doing IPCONFIG/ALL that I found out that the IP address had disappeared. Ive now set the static IP thru WIreless Connection Network Status/Properties/Internet Protocol/Properties. Any thoughts as to how I fix its loss of IP addy?illegitimi non carborundum0

DHCP is disabled on both the router and on the PCs. The router is .1.1, and was giving out .2 .3 and .4
Now the statics are .1.20 and .1.25 ....things like that.
Gateway is set to .1.1
.........and yet it is still losing its IP address. Help!!!illegitimi non carborundum0 -
Try clearing the arp cache.
Open a command prompt and type in
NETSH INTERFACE IP DELETE ARPCACHE
Then try disabling the "routing and remote access service" as follows:
Control panel -> Administrative tools -> Computer Management -> Services and Applications -> Services -> scroll down to "routing and remote services" and check to see that it is "disabled", if it is not, then right click on it and choose properties, then choose disabled in the "startup type" box."

Cheers TOG. Did the arp cache (OK). Routing and remote access service was already disabled.
I'll see how it goes......I also now know how to find the event log which might also give some clues as to whats going on.illegitimi non carborundum0 -
OK - it's a known problem in XP. The arp cache is supposed to flush automatically but sometimes gets corrupted. If you continue to get the problem let me know and I can give you a batch file that will flush the cache automatically for you every 5 minutes.
