Help me out...
Following recommendations on here I want to use hostgator.com to host a simple website I will publish.
All I will do is use MS Publisher or similar to create the site.
But have just noticed that hostgator offer Linux hosting only.
It probably seems a dumb question, but does that mean I have to have Linux on my pc , or does it just mean that the server operates in Linux.
And moving on, am I able to use MS Publisher or should I find another free tool to use????
It all seems so complex to me

You can publish pages on linux or windows based servers regardless of whether you're running the same OS. You will have to check with your hosting company whether you can use MS publisher to publish to their server (never used it myself). If not, you can create your pages on whatever you want and copy them onto the server using the file manager in the control panel.Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0

Windows or Linux hosting will not affect your site.
MS Publisher probably will. Try this

25987 times better than publisher for websitesIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -
It won't make a difference to what you are creating, because the only time you would need to differentiate is when you are making a website with more advanced programming languages which are specific to the Linux or Windows offerings.0

Also, the way to get content out onto your site is mostly through ftp (or a web console if hostgator provides one). However, this is the same irrespective of wether it is a windows or linux server. If you're copying over your pages from a windows box you can do it through windows explorer by simply using
ftp://username:password@host
This eliminates having knowledge of ftp. Hope this helps0 -
lol, I didn't mean to stick out my tongue
It;s the colon ':' followed by 'p' that's done it
So that should be
ftp://username:password@host

Actually it will depending on what type of scripts you use. If you need Frontpage Extension support, Linux hosting won't be much use.0 -

Frontpage will work on a linux server, you can even get ASP working with a few mods. Main things are that most linux hosts will not support MSSQL or ASP.0 -
my server is linux and runs frontpage extensions fine, but none of my clients require that at all these days...
Also, Something like publisher, doesn't really make great looking websites IMO.. and i agree with Reggie with a recommendation to get different software..0 -

I disagree, i would not reccommend it, but i have clients using publisher just fine and its easy for them. While i cant say it will load as fast as a proper designed site, it does the job while not looking a mess.0
