Website Hosting

Options
I had my first website built a few months by a company local to me and they said that they would do all the search engine submisions. As the nature of my website is uncommon it should reach the top of search engine but this could take several months. I have seached many websites usind different keywords but my site come up knowwhere, even when i put in the full name in the search.

The website is hosted by the company who designed it i pay them £35 a month. If i decide to stop using them to host the website what happens to the site? Do I own it can i have it hosted by someone else? I need the answers before i speak to the website designer.

Thanks a lot

Adam

It would depend on the contract you signed with them when you had the site made. Did you pay any money for the site or is the cost of designing and making the site covered by the £35 per month? Also, did you make the purchase of the domain name or did they (and if they did, did they make it in your name?).

You can check by doing a whois search.

You need to examine what you signed and give more information to us. On the information given and on past experience, I would say that they own the domain name and the website. You really need to look at your contract.

you may need to find alternative hosting (£10 a year ish) and upload the site to that

you should own the rights to the web address if it's registered in your name , but you may need to transfer that to your new web host if they turn funny, otherwise you just enter the details given to you by your new web host itn the contol panel for your domain ( I retain my web addresses elsewhere to my web hosts in case of these sorts of problems)

when you have a new web host just download the site from the curent company and then upload to the new one

is it an online shop ??

Getting to the first pages of good search engines is a tricky business, and there is no guarantee. Better to use targeted advertising such as Google Adwords.
  • I paid £350 for the website and they purchased the domain for me . The website says it is copyright of me . I know its hard to get onto search engines but the web design company that designed my site are up there in a crowded market so why is my site invisible

How long ago did your site go live? Also, do you have dates from which your site was submitted? It can take time for your site to actually appear in the search engine results. You can speed this up (and improve your ranking) by finding other sites that do pop up with your search (but are not conflicting business) and do a link exchange, which a) gets your site into the results faster and b) improves your ranking. It involves putting a link to their site in your pages and them doing the same for you. You'd have to contact them and suggest it first obviously.

Other things you can do include an xml sitemap and better use of you title and header tags. PM me with your site's URL if you want and I'll have a look?
