free music downloads

Can anyone recommend a music/films etc download website, preferably uk based?
Was in Kazaa till i found out it was illegal.
Had problems trying to register with 24/7 downloads,(usa based).
Don't know where to turn now there are so many knocking about

Exactly 24/7 downloads professes to be legal.
This is why I'm asking the question, need advice off someone who knows about this minefield.
