I get that now- thanks! That makes sense! It goes in the old noddle eventually!!!!

They did ask me on the phone how many hours hubby works (and I did put it on the forms) and they know his income, (as well as start dates, employer, PAYE no, payroll no, etc,) so I assumed that meant they had his work details. Maybe there's something else they didn't ask for?

He works 40 hours per week, by the way.(hours and income in 1st post)

I suppose what's baffling me most is why the HMRC site calculator says that we're entitiled- and the TCO says we're not- especially when the TCO has more info than the calculator needed.

    Worth pursuing, d'you think?

  • I would give them a call over the weekend as they are still open 8am - 8pm.

Ask them if they have the work details. Make sure they have the hours correct.

Edit: Just checking the amount you gave for entitlement. You would only qualify for the amounts of WTC you stated if your partner earned less than £6420 in the previous year. The amount of £4310 is the Basic, Couple and 30 hour elements of WTC. This is the maximum you would qualify for if your earnings were less than £6420. But for every £1 earned above this threshold, 39p is deducted from the award.

If his income is more than this you may have made a mistake on the calculator. Did you tick the box stating he gets JSA, IS or Pension Credit? Or maybe you didnt enter the income?

Thanks for taking the time to reply, subsoniccoyote, I appreciate it.

The £4310 was WTC and CTC together- the WTC alone worked out at
    £1, 314.76

I double checked it just now (being extra careful what I ticked, etc, just to be sure), and today it says we quailfy and gives an amount of
£1304.18- (obviously that's different now as it's a few days since I last did the calculator).

I think a phone call might be a good idea.

I know everyone makes mistakes but giving the HM Revenue the information doesnt actually mean they have it down correctly. I have found this out the hard way ie our debt to them of £900, hence every time I ring them now I make them repeat over and over again what figures they have for the both of us and make sure I write down the date/time, what was said in the conversation and the name of the person I spoke to. Another lesson I have learned is that you must make sure you receive their statement with the new changes. Have you got the statement from them with the correct figures?

Yep, the latest award notice, received this week, has our income stated correctly on it. I've checked the '07- '08 amount and the '08- '09 amount, and both are spot on- yet on the next page it still says that we're not entitled to WTC.

Just because it has the income right check that it has the line 'works X hours per week' - mine they changed the employer and amount but not that I was actually working just recorded that I had an employer

    Curiouser and curiouser!!!!
I had another look- and they do have 'works 40 hours per week' on the award notice.

Was all ready to have a chat with them after weekend (family visited) but suddenly got another award notice- (ammended). This one shows that we are entitled to WTC!
They paid it in ok yesterday- so hopefully that's that solved!

Looks like they spotted it themselves after all.

Thank you for all your help and advice folks. I appreciate you taking the time and making the effort.

  • It is possible there was an error but the adviser you spoke to when you called has probably noticed the error and corrected it.

Glad to see it has been sorted now.
