Simple way to create an index for scanned docs

I have got a lot of documents at work that are filed for future reference and was thinking of creating a simple digital database with the titles (that I can scroll through) of the documents being clickable to open the scanned file itself. As I have no clue on how to work with databases, I would be grateful for any guidance or pointers to a simple piece of software that could do the trick ( I have googled and ended up with a headache). Thanks in advance for any help.

They are stored mainly as JPEGs and PDFs.

    I meant location?

Hard drive, CD or a pen drive etc.

I use whereisit daily but my copy is very old, I use it to scan CD/DVD's but you can also scan Hard drives or just folders.

Find the item in the search and if the drive is connected it will open it.

Thanks for the suggestion. Whereisit seems to be something that will search for files located on a drive or media but what I am after is really some sort of a database that I can create myself (documents' titles) and then attach the relevant files (scanned documents) to. Choosing a particular title by clicking it would then open that attached file. Hope that makes sense.

My files are all stored on the computer's hard drive.

I think it will do all that.

Does it have a free trial?
Where Is It? is a shareware sharewareprogram. You may test the program out at no charge for an initial trial period of 14 days since the day of installation.

You point it at the folder/drive and it will catalogue everying in that folder/drive.

You can edit the names of items to what ever you like in whereisit they do not change the actual files.

Just today I was reading this about Radiologists using Itunes to catalogue pdfs, but that wouldn't be much use for your jpgs as Itunes doesn't support them (except as album art)

Feels this could be quite a neat idea (and free). I will look at Whereisit in more detail but may consider converting my other formats into PDFs (not difficult with things like PDF Creator;)) and trying the iTunes idea.

SRA on a separate but slightly related note and being the 'iTunes Guru', is there yet a portable version of iTunes? Google is showing some torrents but I don't know how safe or reliable these are.

I don't think it's easy. There are a few suggestions on this thread.

I think the easiest way would be using MojoPac - but personally I find MojoPac a bit annoying to get on with. You can't just run things from your USB drive, you have to launch and wait for MojoPac to get its hooks into the system your working on before you can access the apps you've installed on it.
