Chess.exe worm removal?

Options
Hi all,

There are four of us here of varying levels of techyness (varying from knowing a little more than the average user up to two guys who fix computers for a living) and we are all stumped!

I managed to accidentally download (and run - yes I know but I was sleep deprived at the time) a virus the other day and it seriously messed up my laptop, symptoms including not displaying any websites on any browser, pretending it isn't connected to the internet, all system restore points deleted, pop ups for "Microsoft anti spyware click here to scan!" (not that stupid, don't worry :p) and blue screening every time I tried to shut it down.

Anyway I thought we would have to back up and format, but one of the professional techy guys managed to fix it and it's working perfectly now apart from one thing.

When I insert a USB stick, after I eject it, if I plug it into another computer the stick renames itself "Chess" and instead of the removable drive logo it has a green and yellow chess board. The autoplay options (View pictures, view folder, etc) include "Run application" - luckily Windows doesn't automatically pick this. If I "explore" the USB drive, two hidden files are on there - Chess.exe, and an autoplay document. If I delete these the memory stick then works as normal once ejected.

Now the computer has been scanned with various virus scanners and none of them have picked it up. I've tried scanning a memory stick which has the Chess.exe file in it and they don't pick that up either. Googling for "Chess.exe" brings up mostly game download websites. It does bring up a couple of virus description sites but they don't tell you how to remove it, but seem to suggest it is a worm.

Any ideas?
I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
    alternate download link 1
    alternate download link 2
    • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
      • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    • On the Scanner tab:
      • Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
      • Then click on the Scan button.
    • The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
    • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

The techie man who fixed it in the first place used that and it didn't pick it up.

Any other suggestions? Thanks though :)

Have you run malwarebytes as walked through in brown's post?
  • Yes, I did. Few things came up, I've removed them, but the chess.exe still comes up when I plug in my usb sticks.
Thanks a lot for the quick response

Try booting into safe mode and running a full system scan with Nod, as it could not be picking it up if its running.

I've try to run nod in safe mode, but it came up in ms-dos windows. Please see below

when I googled worm chess.exe and remove I keep getting sites refering to W32.Ogid

It might not be what you have but maybe worth having a look at what google brings up
  • iviv
    iviv Posts: 572 Forumite
Indeed, thats what I found. Symantec doesn't have a specific removal tool, so the safe mode virus scan with NOD should have caught it.

Those errors are normal, its trying to scan files which are in use, and can't.
