can i get a switch payment refunded?

Hi.

i have just been emailed and told that the company i paid to sort my hotel reservation ceased to trade.

here is part of the email....

"As you may be aware the Travel Extras business ceased trading on 19th October 2005. Please see https://www.abta.com for direct confirmation.

For the avoidance of doubt, Travel Republic is in no way connected with
Travel Extras.

However, in the interests of the customers of Travel Extras, many of
whom have imminent travel plans, we have agreed to contact you to help
you rebook your arrangements.

Please note your original booking, as detailed below, will not be
honoured.

As the Travel Extras business is not an ABTA member ABTA are unable to
assist customers on this occasion. In contrast, we would highlight that
we are a full ABTA member and all bookings with us are therefore
protected accordingly."

is there anyway i can get a refund would anyone know please.

  • I am afraid that you stand little chance of getting a refund on a Switch transaction as it is a debit card and not covered by the same laws as credit cards.

You can certainly try by asking at your bank, however. I beleive some people with Visa debit cards have had some luck but that was due to the fact that Visa is also a credit card issuer.

You will be added to the list of creditors and the liquidator will probably contact you, however, I would hold out very little hope of getting a refund that way.

Not much help to you now but in future if you use a credit card or book through an ABTA member you will have more security. I don't know if you have travel insurance, you might look into that but I suspect it will not cover this loss either.
