Not anymore. I thought that as well but I've had a lappy in this week thats' proven otherwise. Browsers, browser plugins, drivers etc all now have a far larger memory footprint. Been a while since I've seen a PC with under 512MB in.

Ok, I understand your point, but the OP did say the PC was freezing. My point was that even with 256Mb it might run slow but it should not freeze. Windows' memory management is good enough to page stuff on and off the hard disk without that happening.

Hence my suggestion that there is probably something else amiss that more memory won't solve.

Will it damage it or will it just say not accepted or something?
Don't worry, the manufacturers thought of that. The ram slots are different sizes for different types. If you try and put in the wrong type, it won't go in. Unless you use excessive force, which will damage it :p

The Crucial website has a scanner which will check your computers current memory and tell you what type you currently have. With that info, we'll be able to recommend you what to get :)

    Well listen to this...

This was my first ever computer when i got it 5-6 years it cost £700

    This includes...
    256 RAM
    2 ghz
    80 GIG hard drive
    CD WRITER
    FLOPPY DRIVE
    CRT MONITOR
    LEXMARK PRINTER

and it never had all the good stuff on it like sim ple backup or anything like that

I can truly say i got ripped off :(

That's nothing, I spent the best part of £1000 in 1986 on an Amstrad 1512 - no hard disk, 512Kb of RAM (1/2 MB!), one 5 1/4" floppy drive, a dot matrix printer, a colour monitor and no internet!!! Still, managed to complete a degree in maths and computing using it!!:rotfl:This was my second computer!
I'm mad!!!! :rotfl::jand celebrating everyday every year!!!

Not at all. That was the going rate at the time. PCs get cheaper and faster year by year (Moore's Law)

By 2012 a pc might cost £100 and run at 21ghz - who knows...

    Hi CLLC
High temp could be a couple of things you can do for yourself. Check & clean the cpu fan. If you are really useful you can replace the heat compound on the cpu die, quite simple to do, just ask for instructions. Adding more ram will not cool it as much as you are hoping for I think is the answer you are looking for, get more ram for effeciency and speed.

Also in this hot weather the pc insides get hotter, and can not get any cooling air flow. It can be better to remove the side panel, move it from a sunny spot or resite if stuck in a cupboard or under a desk or install more fans.
