mot reg plate question
I know they check your reg plate when you have an mot, but what do they look at?? my back one is cracked around where the screws go in. Surely they wont fail me on this, my mot is due soon, dont want it to fail on something so silly.
I've already changed my back tyres and a wiper coz they would have failed it, just trying to make sure it sails through. Sorry if this is a bit of a numb question.

Any damage to a number plate can cause a fail.
If those cracks get worse it could cause the plate to fall off or for your reg no to be obscurred, which is illegal.
So if it were me, I'd be getting the plate changed.0 -
I advise you decide now who you would buy a new numberplate from and find out the price.
If you fail the test, go and buy your numberplate, and return for a free partial examination, and pass certificate, assuming the MOT testers price for a number plate is a rip off. Take a screwdriver with you incase they want to charge for fitting.
Examiners opinion vary from person to person, one might think it is fine another might fail it. Generally small radial cracks around the screw holes do not fail. AFAIK they only fail a cracked plate if water has got inside and caused damage to the black font (de-laminated). If your characters are not affected then have it tested. - assuming you can source a cheap replacement quickly after the fail. Otherwise buy a cheap replacement in advance. And to be safe you should order a plate with the new font and the BSAU/postcode marks because legally you are supposed to renew old plates to this font.0 -
a few years ago my number plate failed on the spacing,i put the old badly cracked plate back on and it passed.
again its just up to the testers mood at the time, probably best to get a set of legal cheap plates from ebay,as wig says it save you being ripped off by the garage at the time of mot.
you can get legal plates delivered from ebay for around £6 each....work permit granted!0 -
Well looking at it you can still clearly make out the numbers and letters on the plate and water hasnt got in and affected it. I'll have a look round and see what the cheapest option is. Where would be a good place to look, other than ebay, i dont like using ebay.
