Who's likely to approve me....

A bit of a general question I guess....

I've been in the UK for nearly 4 years - I haven't really needed a credit card as I've been using my Aussie credit cards and just transferring money home each month to pay it off (expensive but at least I had access to a credit card!).

I've moved into my new place about 4 months ago and waiting for the local authority to put me on the electoral roll (they're doing the annual survey) in December. I haven't been on the electoral roll before (I was living in a share house before and I never bothered).

I've got a Barclaycard with a rubbish limit because although I don't have a bad credit history, I literally don't have a credit history. I'm sure after a period of time Barclaycard will increase my limit so I can actually do something with it (£260 - you can't even buy airline tix!).

So, my question is.... What other credit card providers are likely to give me a decent product where I've been living in a new place for around 6 months (when I apply in Dec when I'm on the electoral roll) and I'd been living in my old place for 3.5 years (although not on the electoral roll). I'm employed full time and been with the same employer for about 18 months and have two credit searches on my file (Barclaycard & Capital One) plus I've switched from HSBC to Barclays so there's a new current account search as well (I can't imagine that's going to count against me).

Capital One refused, which I thought was weird, given that I've not got a bad history. I suspect it's got a lot to do with me not being on the electoral roll though.

I'd like an Egg Money or Mint card... but I've no idea if they would view my recent move and lack of electoral roll presence unfavourably.

Any ideas?

Do you currently have a mortgage or other line of credit such as a store card or HP agreement? It would certainly help your credit rating no end if you did. Otherwise you will probably need to start with a credit builder card.

  • I have one credit card (Barclaycard) with a small credit limit and a mobile phone account (which shows up on my credit file as being maintained in good order) and that's it.
