Okay I bought a laptop from a friend last month and although it says I have 12 updates to install they always fail.
Alot of them seem to be security one's so I'm worried that I'm at risk, I'm running xp.
I've checked the history and no updates have been installed since May so I know they have gone in at some point. Just not now.
Does anyone know how I can solve this? In plain English please I don't do Technical talk lol
Many thanks in advance.
Casey.

First and foremost go through the malware removal guide (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=133269) and what security software do you use (anti virus etc)?
Best to eliminate the possibilities of malware being on the system first before narrowing down what the problem may be."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Go start> all programs. Then near the top of the list should be 'Windows Update'.
Run this, it'll ask if you want to do is express or custom. Select express, and continue through the prompts. This should install the updates.0 -

Hi,
Unfortunately their is no simple way to solve the problems with updates failing. One of the many solutions that exist is this one...
http://squamber.wordpress.com/2008/07/09/windows-updates-failing/
I used this one to fix a number of our machines in work. BUT it depends on the cause of the failure. If you get a specific error message such as a code ensure you note it and report it back if you need to.0 -
When you got the laptop did you reinstall Windows? It's the first thing I'd do if using a computer used by someone else. That way you're not left with any software problems/clutter "left over"."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP installation or you repair a Windows XP installationEx forum ambassador

try installing sp3?The orginal post in this thread has a very very slim chance of being about money saving. The post is more than likely to ask a question that google could answer better than any of us.0

Okay I followed all your advice and now have all the updates installed and running great.
So a huge thank you to you all for taking the time to reply.

"Everyone", that way we're ALL owed a drink.

(on a serious note I suppose it'd be useful for future reference but it could also easily be a combination of factors, the main thing is the issue is solved)"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
