Need Oil Burner Advice
Having discussed with her indoors, we are slowly coming round to the idea replacing our current petrol guzzling cars, Now the thing is we both enjoy a spirited drive, and having had a number of hire cars in the past that run on diesel we both disliked them all apart from a 535D
So my question is there any diesels out there that handles well, looks good, and goes like the clappers when needed and allowed.
I am ready for some test drives, and have a budget in mind of around 25-30K

Anything with common rail injection or "red i".
Ford do a TDCi version of their Mondeo ST which has ridiculous torque and doesn't half pull away well and will give you 50MPG when you want.0 -
does it need to be a large car?
audi tt TDI does it for me. brand new at 27k....work permit granted!0 -
I'd steer clear of anything with a 4-pot. They sound bloody horrible and that includes the VAG engines. Look for an inline 6 - BMW or Mercedes both do such.0

theres nowt wrong with 4 pots on a oil burner apart from when there cold and thats the only time they sound like a tractor and so do 6 pots and with a little mod they run smoother and faster (voids warranty if you forget to take of for service and you have to tell the insurance company)there or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff0

Thanks for that, I have booked a test drive for this saturday afternoon.
My OH will is well pleased.0 -
It took 20 months driving one of the best 4 pot diesels you can get to finally accept I'm never going to be happy with a 4 cylinder diesel. They can be quiet on the motorway, but under load they rattle. I am spoilt by the V6 petrol I had for 6.5 years before I guess. I have a BMW 320d, I have half an eye out for a 325d or 525d, not worried about going faster, just want the refinement.
A new 318d falls in your price bracket and has EU official combined 60mpg. Wait a few weeks though, orders for the new facelift model will be taken soon for Autumn deliveries.
I'd put my money into a young 3 to 6 month old 325d which still gives EU official combined 47.9mpg.
Test drive one of these as well as the TT before making a decision.0 -
AdrianHi, I am a petrol lover, but will take on board your advice, and luckily the BMW garage is not from the Audi dealer. AM not too keen on the styling of the 3 series, but do like the 5 series, sp with the M Sport kit, it has that tetonic gangster look about it.0

When you work out total cost of use (I do this) there is almost no difference in costs between a 325i and a 325d, 330i and 330d due to the price of diesel and the fact the petrol engines are also remarkably economical for the performance they offer. Worth a thought if your a petrol lover.0 -
Hi, I have a volkswagen eos 2.0 sport tdi it is a hard top convertible and it goes like the clappers not bad on fuel, is pretty quiet for a diesel i got loads of extras that i wanted and only spent £24,250.
perhaps try a passat or the new passat cc? the jetta is quite nice too or even better the tiguan its £35 a year road tax and it can also park itself if the missis has trouble parking.

Styling of the latest crop of BMW's is not their strong point for sure, it's the drive that wins you over if you like that sort of thing. The 5 series is a different animal (I have test driven a 525d M Sport) to the 3, more composed smoother ride, it's big, handles very well but not as "chuck able" as a 3 series.

Would be interesting to see those figures, its the missus who is banging on about fuel costs, admittedly I currently get 23mpg, which drops to 16ish when I find a clear road.
And "chuckability" is vital, its just a shame I dont have the budget for an M5, the decision would be easy then0
