We need to move our gas meter from the kitchen to the outside wall of our new extension - approximately 6 meters. It is going to cost at least £500. Is there a way of getting this done by someone other than (in our case) Northern Utilities? Can a corgi registered plumbing & heating engineer do it?
It really seems a lot of money for the actual work involved.

No harm in asking your local CORGI-registered engineer if they can do the job and to get a work quote from them.

Your utility will be sending a CORGI-registered engineer anyway.

I am afraid the only person/company who can move your meter is your gas supplier (not the company you pay for the gas) which is I think National Grid, but perhaps Northern Utilities are part of them?
Local plumbing engineers should not do the job as I think there is some form of seal on the meter which if broken could indicate tampering.
However having said that the price does seem high, but then again you do not seem to have any choice.

I think a Corgi engineer can only do work after the meter and emergency cutoff value. As the value and meter need moving I think this can only be done via the network operator (this is defintely the case for electricity). Depending on the move required they may also have to run a new pipe from the main rather than just moving the end of the existing pipe.

Thanks, I had a feeling that was the case. Yes they are part of the National Grid.

We can get the corgi registered guy to do the reconnection which will save us a bit of money.

    Hi

Def don't ask anyone else to move the meter for you.

The gas transporter owns everything up to and including the meter and only they should carry the work out (or sub contract)
