PC Problem

Hi all,

Just got an email from my sister with the problem below. I told her to remove AVG. Has anyone else got any advice.
The internet has suddenly stopped working on My PC at home ! It was working OK on Monday night after which I upgraded to AVG V7. Tried it last night and it connects to Broadband OK but when I click on Explorer I keep getting 'Cannot Find Server or DNS error'. I've checked my connections and I'm definitely connecting through BT Broadband. Tried pinging the Server IP address and that came back with a reply but when I pinged the client it kept timing out. I tried doing a few system restores from various checkpoints but they didn't achieve anything as it said there had been no system changes to restore !
Thanks...Gracust

Try some different DNS servers as BT's can be a bit flakey

  • Well I would try to Uninstall AVG then test the internet first to see if it actually was AVG that caused the problem in the first place.

If it works when AVG is uninstalled then try re-installing it again and see if it works, If not then obviously its AVG causing the problem.

If it does not work once uninstalled then it is not AVG causing the problem.

She said she was pinging the server??? What server??? Try pinging an internet addy such as https://www.google.com to test the internet connectivity.

    Hope that helps.

Latest update from the problem machine:
I tried running BT Broadband Help on my PC last night before I tried anything else and it detected a problem and suggested I rang BT. Did this and they were ever so helpful - tested the line etc. which is all Ok and then diagnosed a Winsock problem. Apparently it's easy to fix but they can't tell me what to do as it's microsoft code! They gave me microsoft's number and I called them this morning - got thru to their call centre somewhere in India and they were worse than useless ! Told me to contact the manufacturer or I could pay them £49 for their special telephone assistance.

Anyway I've had a look on the microsoft site and it gives a bit of info about Winsock problems suggesting that it could either be multiple copies of the WSOCK32.DLL or a corrupt file. So I'll check out the PC when I get home tonight.

    Any ideas?

sounds like a happy99 worm has got onto the pc before AVG finished installing.

run avg update to get most recent virus definition files, then disconnect from the internet and run a full virus scan, if viruses found, rerun avg scan, do not reconnect until virus scan shows clean

check http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/global/index.html enter WSOCK32.DLL into the search box, there are several trojan/virus removal tools that can be downloaded, not sure how if she is unable to connect to the internet..... perhaps she can ask a friend to download them
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

May I add that if you run an AVG scan its best done in safe mode
    usually F8 on start up............
