Ebay Desktops

Considering buying a desktop, possibly a dell deal and had a quick look at ebay. You can get some high spec pentium IV for around £300 for the base unit alone. Obviously they are built with cheaper parts but are they still good machines?

Dell desktops on eBay or a general PC from eBay?

I bought a PC a few years ago through eBay... before my days of building my own.

I used a high (300+) feedback user, and chose a deal where all branded products were listed. When my unit arrived, I opened it up and checked out that all that was in there was what was on the list.

The PC's still running, although it's turning into a Trigger Broom (Only Fools ref if you know it ;-)) now :-)

I'm wary of Dell desktops on eBay, because Dell usually go by the 'ownership tag' when calling about a warranty issue. It's not easy to transfer the ownership tag over, so you must know exactly who's listed as the owner if you have a problem. Getting the ownership released and put in your name can be a long winded process as well!
  • If it's a Dell machine your after then you may want to keep an eye on the offers posted over @ Rpoints.com. There are good deals posted all the time and im sure you will find a cheap system. Some of the members even sell bargains on Ebay. There is the added security of buying direct from Dell plus cashback from Rpoints.

A lot of pc sellers on e-bay also have shops so these are the best people to use.

Many will use branded parts and these will be listed on the auction, you can check up on reviews of the components.

I would have thought the cheaper parts are in the Dell's so they can sell them so cheap.

I personally wouldn;'t buy a comp on ebay as there is too much scope to a) get ripped off b) not get what you paid for c) not get the warrenty you should etc....

Better to keep an eye out for Dell's special offers - they seem to want to give them away for nothing recently!
