Okay, I found this:
freenetname.co.uk
Signup for any services (including payg dialup) and you can claim a free domain name.
Claiming the domain name is fairly simple:
1) Signup for a dialup account
2) Dial into the dialup account
3) Go to freenetname.co.uk and login via the "my account" link
4) Click the claim free domain link
5) Search for the domain you want
6) Enter the registration details and click submit
7) After you've seen the confirmation (something about 24-48 hours to register) click disconnect
I suggest you check what domain you want before you proceed with all this - then you don't have to spend so much time on dialup. It's 4p/min on a weekday and 1p/min on evenings and weekdays. You can check to see if you're domain is free on freenetname.co.uk, or Whois.Net
You've just got yourself a free domain... mine registered in a few hours (I claimed the domain at about 3am and was registered by 11ish).
The domain comes with 100MiB webspace too. I've yet to see what coding languages you can use, and if you can change the dns via freenetname.co.uk, I'll update this post soon as I get more info on the webspace and domain controls
Thought this may be of use to people
Update!
It appears the web hosting space is limited to html files only, and the domain way to get control of the domain is to pay a £30 transfer fee to Nominet... You need to get you're reference number for this which costs 50p per minute to their technical support line.
So... for anyone just wishing for a html-based only site, this would be good... anyone wishing to use scripting, this is not going to be that useful.
Also another offer I found at planetdomain.com: .info domains £1.54 per year (2 years registration minimum I think, or not... I think I registered a domain for 1 year there)
