Free (NHS) European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

Apply here:
https://www.ehic.org.uk
If you are a UK resident, you are entitled to medical treatment that becomes necessary, at reduced cost or sometimes free, when temporarily visiting a European Union (EU) country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. Only treatment provided under the state scheme is covered. However, to obtain treatment you will need to take a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with you. Please note: Not all UK residents are covered in Denmark, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. Click on the 'Health Advice for Travellers' link below, if you are unsure whether you are covered.

  • We've already got ours, great posting though, and an absolute must for anyone travelling in europe as all existing E111s have either expired or expire by end of December. Get yours now before the summer rush!

  • Yep got ours also.

For those who don't know all pre 2005 E111's expired DEC.2004

You now must get one E111 per person and at the point of applying can register to get the EHIC sent out. We recieved ours about Sept. 2005 for individual E111's taken out in Jan.

An absolute must these days because most travel insurance won't cover costs which WOULD have been paid under reciprocal agreements covered by EHIC's.

    Great post Swiss Toni

Could you provide some proof for this statement.

How long will my card last?
An EHIC will last from 3 to 5 years.
I have had my E111 for several years and I always take it with me on holiday. Can I still use this?
All E111s issued prior to 19th August 2004 are now invalid. E111s issued after this will be valid until 31st December 2005.

I ordered cards for the whole family with it yesterday and I just tested it again just now and it works perfectly fine for me.
This link only gets me this:

My guess, it counts what browser you're using, use this link instead: https://www.ehic.org.uk (I'll edit my first post to reflect it, sorry for the confusion) :)

    Well Done Swiss Toni

I have just ordered cards for five of us and it was so much easier than queuing up in the post office, taking forms home, biddy in post office helpfully checking them then getting it
    wrong!!! etc.

The process sent me crackers last time I had to go through all the palaver.

This was nice and simple and much quicker :j

    Thanks SwissToni.

I've been meaning to do this for a while (but I'm just lazy!) and have been badgered by the people I am going away with to do it, one of them even got me the forms to fill out about 3 weeks ago, and I have hardly looked at them!

Done it now though, just have to hope it comes in time!
