rail from York to Thornaby/Eaglescliffe

Hi
I've just accepted a new job in York and would like to commute by rail from my home, which is near Eaglescliffe station and Thornaby Stations.

NorthernRail and Transpenine express have offered the following prices for season tickets. Since I'd need to get in for before 9am and back for around 6.20pm ish its probably peak times.

Weekly £92.70
Monthly £356.00
Quarterly £1068.00
6 Monthly £2135.90
Annual £3708.00

Can anyone suggest anything at all, on how I could get this cheaper?
I've read through the excellent tutorial on how to get cheap tickets, but can't seem to find anything cheaper.

thanks

    1) see if your employer will give an advance

    2) get a 0% credit card and buy the ticket on that so you don't have to pay it all off

DON'T get the quarterly or 6 monthly as you don't save any money over a monthly and you lose flexibility / lose money when you take holidays

I worked out if I book in advance I can get tickets daily for £14 each = 70 pounds a week(5 days). cheaper than the 92.70 for 7 days.
  • A Grand Central only return ticket from Eaglescliffe to York costs £9. A single is £6. check their timetable.
  • Yes. Traveled on their train yesterday and its nice for £9 a day. Only problem, is that its a little late on the return. Anyone eles have any more ideas?

Until you miss the train. Or have to work over. Or your advance purchase train is the one from Penzance and is four hours late, and you have to wait for it.

Remember that you can use the train at weekends, if you wish.

I know you asked about trains, but is a cheap car not an option? York is just over an hour away (depending on how fast you go) and gives you a bit more flexibility.

bear in mind though that Grand Central are having a lot of problems with delays, through only having a limited number of old trains. Not a criticism as such - more passing along of info: a few of my friends have used their service, and commented on how good the service was - when it turned up!! Not good if you need to make a good impression in a new job!

Don't bank on Grand Central long term, it will be gone within twelve months, and the train paths sold for a large profit. Thats what the company was set up for ;)
