Insuring 2 cars in my name

Hi

I appear to have been boxed into a corner by my insurance company. I have a sports car fully comprehensively insured in my name with maximum no claims bonus. I want to insure a second medium sized family car, also in my name, to do shopping, bike carrying, etc.

The problem is my insurance company do not understand that I can only drive one car at a time and have been quoted more than double the price of the sports car insurance for the second car. This is mainly due to the fact that the no claims bonus for this car has to start from scratch.

I don't mind paying a reasonable amount for insurance and wondered if anyone has any suggestions.

  • Find an insurer that will offer you a second car introductory discount.

Most mainstream insurers will offer such discounts subject to you meeting their criteria for age, claims history, driving record, driving restrictions on the policy etc.  You will often get the equivalent of maximum no claims discount on the second vehicle.

Usually there's no need to insure the main car with the same company to get the intro discount but you may have to provide evidence of NCD in the form of the last renewal notice.

Any decent motor broker should be able to come up with several suitable schemes to choose from.

    Thanks

I phoned Adrian Flux last night for prices on both cars and the introductory deal on my second car was surprisingly good. They proposed using the no claims bonus on the second car and the voluntary excess was a little higher than before but.....

The combined cost of the insurance policies would come to under £560 as opposed to around £900 with my current insurer, where the second car would have no discount or no claims bonus.

May try a couple more brokers but very happy with those prices.

  • Excellent news.

Shuffling the no claims bonus around is often a good way to cut the premiums down. The general rule should be that the maximum earned discount should go on the highest rated policy (the one that attracts the highest premium before discount).

However, where a special scheme exists, this rule may need to be varied (e.g. collectors cars, affinity schemes, limited mileage policies etc).
