Fridge/freezer

I've just had to replace my fridge/freezer.

The new one will be arriving soon. I am told by the supplier that I need to leave it unplugged for 24 hours "to allow the gases to settle" - huh!!!???

Dont know if this is because the only way its going to be able to get into my kitchen is lying down and going in sideways (as the door entrances are so narrow - so problematic - even though its only a standard size fridge/freezer).

Is this really the case? If so - what do I do about all the food stored in my existing one - if I'm not able to just think in terms of "empty it out of the old one - put it in the new one"? (Luckily - I dont have any meat or fish stored - as I'm a vegetarian).

I cant keep the old one plugged in for 24 hours after the new one arrives - as its being taken away by the firm delivering the new one.

(I dont recall this problem before when I had to swop from my first fridge/freezer to the one that is about to head out the door - even though it also must have had to get into my kitchen by lying down and going in sideways - due to same problem with size of kitchen entrances.)

Are the firm I am buying this from just "covering themselves" - but really - what the heck? just get on and swop stuff over and there wont be a problem? - or is there a "REAL" need to keep the new one unplugged for 24 hours as they say?
