I reckon a lot of it is to do with phoning mobiles from landlines. People really don't seem to understand just how expensive it can get. Saying that, I'm not sure the charity I work for has much of a clue either. Yesterday I had to ring a bloke who had emigrated to Western Australia. On his mobile. For an hour.0 -

I can see how this makes it cheaper for you, but doesn't it make it more expensive for your friends and family?
they ring me on my mobile - its never been a problem, and if they call from a mobile its no dearer than ringing a land line. Several of my friends dont have landlines either. I do have a skype number for incoming work calls (in my job students often need to call me and asking them to call a mobile number would not be fair) but that only costs me about £2 a month.0 -
i remember my bill years ago used to be knocking £100 per month
Now about £7 per month (plus the obvious cashback!!!) and almost free mobile phone useage - WINNER!!!0 -
Ahh, I didn't think of that.foreign_correspondent wrote: »if they call from a mobile its no dearer than ringing a land line. Several of my friends dont have landlines either.

Also dialup internet used to cost lots. In the days before flat-rate tariffs you had to pay 1-3p/min. If you were on the bleeding edge and used it before 0845 or points of presence then it was most likely a national rate call (what was it, 4p/min?). Going back further still, it was even worse before BT scrapped their peak rate 9am-1pm. It was easy to run up bills of a tens of pounds a week if you used it a lot (and remember we were on 9.6 or 14 Kbps modems so downloading was a lot slower. I started on a 2.4Kbps modem - ouch!)0
