wireless router - how do I know if secure

Just installed wireless router (speedtouch 585) supplied by AOL.

Did not want to use CD supplied by AOL as thought it would probably try and install aol software(which is already in mess on my pc).

So I just plugged everything in and switched in on, it then automatically took me to router set up page, I took the WEP option. Should I have used WPA ?.

Currently plugged in next to PC (not master socket ). Will want to setup so son can use Wii wirelessly.

How do I know if secure ?

PS. know I can probably google but wanted a quick answer

thanks

Establish the MAC number of each device that you will wish to use yourselves on your wireless network and then set your router to permit only those devices (which your router will identify by their MAC numbers) on to your network.

Can you simplify for me please.

I reran setup - currently shows this configuration

    Security
    spacer.gifAllow New Devices:New stations are allowed (automatically)spacer.gif
    Security Mode:WPA-PSKgenerateTasks()

Am I secure for the moment? then tomorrow I can work on wireless

Managed to get the word MAC in there twice I see. ;)

Mac address filtering is not security.

:rotfl: Well, you're the one who wrote it in lower case. :D

Of course s/he should use WPA. I was adding the fact that MAC filtering should be implemented, too. :)

Look at the picture, and compare with what you see when scanning for networks. Your post sounds like it is now wpa.

I don't know where to get a screen like the one above ( have looked in network connections) & where would I get these MAC codes

Teatime now - will start afresh in morning and do some reading.

    Thanks

Just right click on the small icon at the bottom right hand corner of your screen (similar to wireless-tray.jpg)

Then click on 'Show available networks' then you should see your router name. It will either say unsecured OR security enabled and this will let you know if you are secure.

    Thanks

I think I'm now happy I'm secure. Left PC connected by ethernet/phone cable. Wii can see wireless access point as padlocked.

Still can't connect Wii though - (51330 error). Have entered WPA settings in Wii, tried channel 1.
