Help claiming back car tax

I know I can download a form to claim back car tax but I dont know about when it starts from if I post is tomorrow will it be from the post stamp date or not until the dvla see it? as I want to know if it will be refunded for August as we are so close to the end of the month.

Also I need to know about if I need to declare it a sorn I am going to call up some numbers to see if any one is interested in taking it away for £50 for parts, to fix or whatever, does that mean I need to fill out sorn or wait until I know if its to be scrapped or taken away.

Any advise appreciated thanks

it'll go by the date of the postmark, i think the form asks why you're claiming the tax back, you need to choose the option that the car's off the road.

It will be refunded to the date you put on the form in section 2 and section 3 (if appropriate), if you put 31 July 2008 You will be refunded including August. I have done this and sent the form off on 1st of the following month and still recieved the correct refund. They say it must be posted before the first day of the month, my arguement is that I put it in the postbox on the evening of the 31st, I don't see how they can argue with that. And if my memory serves me correctly, I also used a 2nd class stamp, what matters is when it was posted.

You will need to declare SORN within 14 days. You might aswell do it by filling in section 3 on the tax refund form V14. You must then get an acknowledgement letter from DVLA within 4 weeks, if you don't get it after say 3 weeks, I would phone up during the 4th week.

If and when you sell the vehicle, again you must send off your V5, if you sell it to a motor dealer or scrap man, you must complete part 9 and retain part 9 and send to DVLA. Either way you must get an acknowledgement by return within 4 weeks, if you don't you must follow it up and ask them why you have not recieved an acknowledgement of transfer of ownership.
  • that helps alot thanks so much.

However, I tend to always take risks like this with the post, but logically to protect yourself and your refund you should send it recored delivery on the 31st, then you will have proof of posting, and you might have some insurance cover from the recorded delivery - best to ask the post office counter if it will be insured.

Logically for about £1.50 you might consider the best option is to get postal insurance.
