Paying for dental care & treatment

I went to the dentist the other day and I have been referred to an orthodontist. I did not have to pay for the check up and i don't have to pay for the consultation with the orthodontist as I currently have a maternity exemption card (I have a 6m old daughter).
Basically I have to see the orthodontist about having Orthognathic surgery (operation on the jaw). This would involve a couple of years wearing braces, an operation, plus 9 months of wearing braces afterwards - not to mention all the regular check ups in between.
I asked my dentist if it would cost me anything - she said it's rare for the NHS to pay for adult orthodontics, although it may be considered if my jaw is considered to be "bad enough" to need the surgery.
Does anyone have any ideas on how much this kind of treatment would cost? I really want it done as my jaw has bothered me since i can remember (this does bring to mind why I have never been referred to an orthodontist before though! - I'm 23 now).
Have any of you guys had orthodontic treatments/procedures as an adult?

Hi I had braces fitted when my ds was 3 months and as long as the treatment starts before your child turns 1 year your treatment will be free, if it treatment is needed. If I had to pay for it , it was going to be £1900, for the complete treatment. (I in my early 30's btw) it is defo worth getting your teeth done if you can.0

Thanks for that durham05.
I'm just hoping the NHS say that they will do the op now! If just having braces would have cost you £1900, i dread to think how much the orthognathic surgery would cost me!!!!0
