Firstly have you ruled out a urine infection? Get that checked out first. It could also be attention seeking because cats just don't do that if they are litter trained. Do you clean the litter tray out oftena nd keep it clean? Has there been any changes in the house at all like moving house or changing the room around etc? There is always a reason why they do this and you need to find out what it is by ruling out each possible reason.

Are you washing the duvet yourself at the launderette, or leaving it for a service?
If bleach is used and plenty of soap, then there should be no residual smell of cat pee.
If leaving for a service, ask for bleach and mention the cat pee, you may have to put it into the machine yourself and make sure the bag gets binned and a clean one used.
If the smell is removed, it might stop them repeating.

Some cats are obsessed with the smell of bleach, so be wary :)

I know White Vinegar keeps cats away but it's whether or not you want your house smelling like a fish and chip shop :D You have to find out why the cat is doing this, they don't just do it for nothing, there is always a reason. The cat is only trying to communicate with you.

My daughter has this problem with one of her cats. She has three but the eldest a girl who's eight now has always sprayed on the beds even as a tiny kitten. It does'nt matter what she's tried she still does it.My mum had a female cat who did this all her life too.In her case though she would spray everwhere. When she used the litter tray for a wee she used to spray ,she would'nt wee in a squat like cat's usually do.
Both of these cat's came from a multi cat household and the majority of people I hear with this kind of thing seem in most cases to have more than one cat.Maybe it's a territory thing who knows.I just wish for my daughter's sake someone could come up with solution to stop it.
  • They are doing it because the bed smells of YOU..and it's the safest refuge in the house (to their furry little minds, because they see you retire there every night when it's dark and predators are about!)

Lots of cats are insecure worry worts, bless 'em! I'm afraid the only sure-fire solution is to keep them out of the bedroom at night. If they wail at the door, well the only solution is to lock them in the kitchen, with their tray. They will get used to it. But you must have some discipline, you cannot allow a pet to foul your house and get into the habit of doing so.

Totally agree, they cost enough as it is nevermind buying new duvets all the time.

Thankyou for all the replies, we have kept both of them in the kitchen the past week so havn't had the problem.

But i'm sure one day we will give in again and let them in the bedroom :rolleyes2

The funny thing is, it's always of a morning.
It's as if they are too lazy to go downstairs and find the soft feeling duvet too relaxing and comfortable.

The litter tray is always clean and we now resort to buying a new duvet rather than washing it because the first time it happend, we had it cleaned in the laundrette, but even then i could smell it, so im sure the boys would have as well.
  • I think you need to be persistent and not let the cats in the bedroom. Fiona
