Hi Op
Yes keratosis pilaris is annoying and rather unsightly. I used to get it on upper arms and exfoliation did not get rid of it.
I found out about this moisturizer lotion called Amlactin which contains lactic acid and ammonium hydroxide and bought some off Ebay USA. Has pretty much sorted me out I'm pleased to say but it is not cheap.
Can also get stuff called LAChydrin.
Careful not to use on sensitive skin, near eyes, or on broken skin - it will sting and possibly make you peel if you do
Scientifically any moisturiser with a strong acid content - eg Vit C or AHA should help the extra keratin shed.
Unscientifically I did read something about some woman using Ghee ( clarified butter) and reporting success. Have not tried this myself as thought smelling rancid was worse than being bumpy!0 -
I have just been reading this post with interest, so decided to investigate the condition on wikipedia.
Having just written a thread on ingrowing hairs, it would seem that possibly I have this.
Small red dots on upper arms with small blotches often, the blotches are much better when I exfoliate and I use cream all the time. But red marks still always there.
I get alot of lumps around my hairline (not itchy but if scratched they bleed!! oh nice......)
And as I previously said on my other thread I get loads of ingrowing hairs for no apparent reason!!
Am I destined for a life of misery and irritation???:(:silenced:0 -
I'm curious as to whether having hair permanently removed helps? The bumps are on the follicles and the hair seems to be trapped... sooo... no hair... no bump?My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -

I thought this too so went to laser clinic, they tried to laser me but said that the hair on my upper arms was far too fine and blond..... so it was back to the drawing board.
I have suffered with KP for years and I never wear ss tops, I am pale too so the redness really shows up..... sometimes it makes me feel depressed ( i know that sound ridiculous, but I am currently trying to find a wedding dress and most of teh lovely ones are sleeveless.)0 -
I get bumpy upper arms and calves. But maybe not as bad as you describe- but enough for me to check out how I compare to others in the summer. Anyway, a quick fix is Palmers Moisturiser with AHA's- less than a fiver. It's in a blue/green bottle, and I've only ever seen it in Boots. Good LuckWon Mulberry Bag Jan 090

I have it on my forearms and upper arms. The best solution I have found is this: in the shower (or bath) use a teaspoon of bicarb to rub on each arm. Do this twice a week. Use a rich moisturiser such as body butter every day. This combination leaves my skin smooth as silk and even-toned.

I actually asked this question to a Dermologica spokes person at an event.
She said it was a result of the bodies reaction to vitamin A, and not processing it properly- not the amount of vitamin A you do/don't eat (its in fruit and veg) but what your body does with it or cannot do with it. (reducing or increasing vitamin A will do nothing).
The spokes person also said she had tried massages, body oils, exfoliators which all turned up a blank and that scientists and dematologists have said it is incureable.
What I did find, is one girl had been using Eucerin with 10% urea (i.e acid?) with some success- it didn't take away the bumps but did reduce them a bit. Since then I've been using it and noticed a slight difference, but then I often forget to use it and have only ever used it three days in a row before forgetting for a week! Could be worth a try though? its not bad to apply and didn't cause me any irritation at all when using.0 -
Paulas Choice do a very good range of both BHA (beta hydroxy acid) and AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) lotions creams and gels which can help greatly and they do a body lotion with 10% AHA which is an excellent maintenance product.
Sulphur soap is also a good one to try when used in conjunction with exfoliating gloves. It really does work, plus you can get it with salicylic acid in, for a bit of extra oomph so to speakJust because you are offended, doesn't mean you are right0
