we got primed mdf skirting from howdens but our carpenter told us its hard to get hold off so you have to keep going back to them.
Before you point fingers, make sure your hands are clean !;)

On the other hand, the bare MDF, can be a nightmare at times.

I'm planning to buy some bare MDF skirting board - I was wondering how difficult it would be to get a nice clean finish on this and based on your comment above I'm now worried that this will be a problem.

Can you explain a little more the difficulties and what I could do to get a nice clean finish that you normally get with the pre-primed stuff..?

    Many thanks in advance,

    Phil

I've used bare mdf and it was hard to prime. I thought I'd primed the lot, but when it came to glossing it the gloss just soaked straight into the mdf in places. I did 4 rooms with bare mdf skirting - 2 looked lovely and 2 looked abysmal! I am a complete amateur though.
:o Trying to become debt free but this site makes me spend a fortune!!! :o
  • I purchased two 3 mtr lengths of MDF light oak skirting boards from STAX trade centre Manchester, £14 per lemngth.

  • I was recently doing up my house and decided to change the skirting boards in the whole house. I went on the internet and found a company called skirting boards direct. I found them to be a great company with lots of profiles. They supplied me with the skirting boards for my whole house and i could not be happier. I would certainly tell other people to use this company.

    Thanks Matgroves.

    Welcome to the forums.

How long have you worked for Skirting Boards Direct? ;)
  • Any ideas about replacing some old timber in my 1910 house - skirting is 235mm high which rules out most modern MDF ; however I did notice that there are MDF Window Boards at 244mm.

Does anyone do old house MDF skirtings do you know?

    Thanks

235mm is really BIG skirting! Sounds like your home uses up half a forest by itself :rotfl:

Not something I have ever seen but I don't have a need for it so can't say that I've looked.

You might need to look for alternatives like you have done if you really want to keep things the same size. Is there a reason why you need to keep the skirting so tall?

You might be able to make your own if you buy some large MDF boards, but you do need to be careful when cutting MDF because you need to protect your lungs from the dust because it can be dangerous if breathed in!

I have a high filtration dusk mask that I would use if working with MDF. They are not exactly cheap either.
  • How about this?

If you get a MDF board of this 18mmx1220x2440 you could cut 5x8ft lengths of 235mm for £15.89 which means £3.78 for each 8ft length. You would need to round each top section but it should be possible. 18mm is quite thick, the next size down is 12mm, unfortunately no 14mm which might of been just about perfect.

But remember about the dust! You might need to buy a decent dust mask but that could be re-used whenever you need it. They come in useful if doing loft insulation and any sanding or dusty work.

I purchased a Draeger Half Mask Respirator because they are meant to be very good. I would of liked a full face version with vision shield because fitting goggles with a respirator is tricky but they cost a lot more, over 3 times the price and nearly 4x.

I got mine from severnside safety over 2.5 years ago.

An option if nothing else turns up. ;)
