Credit Card Direct Debit

I apologise if this question has already been asked!

Basically last month I paid off my credit card by transferring the balance to a new 0% interest card, therefore I had a balance of £0 on my original card. A few weeks later I consulted my bank statement and found that the card company had taken a payment as if the balance still existed. I phoned the company and they confirmed that my account was now in credit due to the overpayment and they would refund me by cheque within the next few weeks. This would have been fine, however the payment had taken me overdrawn and obviously I am now going to be charged for this.

Do I have any comeback as to this charge? Should I have cancelled the direct debit? It was my understanding that my direct debit was set up for the minimum payment, which is a certain percentage of the account balance. As the account balance was £0 should they not have adjusted the direct debit accordingly? I am going to see my bank today to seek their advice but would like to have a little knowledge beforehand!
Any advice at all would be much appreciated.
Many thanks.

  • don't know if you can get the money back from your bank, but only some cards will cancel a direct debit payment if you have cleared the balance or payed the minimum payment due for that month. From my cards Lloyds TSB, citi,First Direct,Marbles and Barclaycard will do this.

It is usually the case that once you have received your statement showing the date and amount of the direct debit that you would need to specifically instruct the credit card company to cancel that payment. Also given that payment instructions are set up several days in advance it is often not possible to cancel such a direct debit payment with only a few days notice.
