Thanks for the breakdown, Joyce, thats certainly ineresting reading.

    can you remember the seller/shop?

Brownbake, that sounds like a real saga! We're having a very experienced bathroom specialist fit ours, he's done my sister's bathroom, several of her friends and a colleague of mine, and can't be praised enough. At first I was reluctant as it was way more than I'd planned on spending, but the more I read about problems such as yours, I'm realising that theres no price for peace of mind.

You have a PM with the name, but I've had a quick look and he is not selling anything just now and his last feedback was 24th July which makes me think he is on holiday.

PS For those referring to me as the Dude from Dundee erm I'm a girlie :o

Good morning: OH is also gas trained (part of his apprenticeship in 1970s) and formalized his electrical qualifications working with a NIECIC domestic contractor but doesn't belittle or feel superior to other trades:it is amazing the skills/trade secrets you can pick up over the years by watching and working harmoniously with other trades.

It is interesting that you have lumped in the CIPHE with CORGI and HVAC: take a look at the CIPHE website to figure out the difference:confused: . The OH has crossed paths with many CORGIs who know diddly about plumbing (and only slightly more about gas:D). CORGI is a gas registration body not a trade organization.....and their experience requirements  I'd choose a plumber who has completed a 5 year apprenticeship and has gas registration over the short course numpty every time.
The CIPHE helps the consumer weed them out...not everyone can find trades through personal recommendations. What do you suggest?

To HH: Have you had any joy with your bathroom yet? I know it can be a tough, old slog.

Blimey turned into a bit of a battlefield here! If we return to the thread topic, all the quibbling over trade organisations and qualifications makes DIY look increasingly favourable to me! If i do the work at least i KNOW i'm not qualified for it! Obviously i am still held to ransom by government bureaucracy aka part p building regs!

However this has all helped focus my mind on who will/wont be renovating my bathroom when it does finally happen. Where i have trades in i'll be going for seperate tradesmen rather than multi-trades - or maybe a single company who employs seperate tradesmen for each type of work. It will probably cost me more and take longer but those are sacrifices i'm prepared to make to get the job carried out properly and to the quality i want. The saying "jack-of-all trades master of none" is at the back of my mind ...though to be fair usually tradesmen are a master of at least one and the phrase can apply equally to the DIYer... like muggins 'ere!

Hi, Andrew...post the pics when it is all done so we can have a gander...no doubts the tips you have picked up on here (and elsewhere) will serve you well and all free to boot.;)
BTW...if you think the trade squabbling is bad here, take a boo at www.diynot.com...positively feral.:D

Greetings... ah... it looks promising...you've looked at the website:D Read down that page ...next couple of paragraphs details the superior levels of membership and requirements.
THE CIPHE website is just one excellent resource for consumers. How about we MSErs put our heads together and collectively generate a list of websites useful in the area of plumbing and heating...I'll start off with some of the links I've posted over the years....

    Energy Saving Trust

Bathroom Academy .... guides on showers, baths etc., links to manufacturers

Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering

CORGI Find and check a gas installer

Health and Safety Executive eg. Gas Safety

Planning Portal Building regulations info, Interactive House Guide

Heating and Hot Water Industry Council Benchmark Scheme
