Try a dilute form of your fave essential oil in a spray bottle for squirting the curtains. (Add a teaspoon of white vinegar if you wanna get rid of nasty nifs)

Don't use citrus oils on anything metal, (not in your washing machine) but otherwise anything goes really. Citrus is however wicked for breaking down grease stains so lovely on lightswitches with grubby finger marks or kitchen surfaces etc.

I often pop a couple of drops on the rag when dusting, wiping don surfaces etc. Have pets, don't use febreeze.

Most cost effective oils for general household cleaning etc are lavender (love it for laundry) sweet orange and lemon oils. I try and buy it in 30 or 50 ml bottles as it's cheaper that way. Most years a 50ml bottle of each lasts a whole year as an annual purchase.

If you have a garden, grow a scented variety of sweet pea for later in the year. The more you cut them, the better they grow and a vase of cut sweet peas smells lovely. In the winter springs of pine or Rosemary do the same job for free.

Our Grans liked cedar wood and dried lavender to keep linens smelling fresh in storage.

A few drops of oil in the hoover bag helps freshen the floors , (still haven't worked out how but it does), give them a sprinkle of bicarb and hoover in the morning if you want odour removal.

Lastly neutradol products are always in the poundshops and so are much cheaper than febreeze. You could try the neutradol spray instead to see if you like it?

Lastly open the windows for an hour each day. It's amazing how much fresher a room can seem at this time of year when you do this. We forget how stale & dry the air gets in our sealed winter homes.
  • Eh, you can have too much of a good thing, you know. I visited my niece's new home quite recently and she had two of those AirWick plug-in thingys on the go. The scent hit me like a hammer as soon as the door was opened and not in a good way either.
  • This isn't of any relevance to the thread, but when the febreeze ad is on tv and they go..

    person 1 "wash it?"

person 2 "wash it with febreeze!"

.. does anyone else just want to shout at the TV "it's not washing!" suggesting that spraying something with febreeze is cleaning it is the same as saying putting a bit of body spray on is the same as having a bath!

OP, it sounds like your house is already so clean you probably don't need febreeze at all :)
