Moving Back with Family - Will Their Benefits Be Affected?

How am I asking the state to bale me out? Since I don't want to gain from her benefits in any way. We have no intention of doing anything underhand and would tell the authorities that we had moved in if we did. If they stopped any benefits I will make up the difference to her - if they don't then that's still not me gaining anything. I am fed up saying now that I simply wanted to know what and at what level they were likely to stop the benefits (so I know what I need to pay her back) so I can work out how much (if any) I will be better off by moving in there.

Any way, I have been a member a day, and this was my first question. I was under the impression that people on here were helpful and didn't pass judgement. How wrong I was. Most of you have done nothing other than pass judgement and make assumptions - even when I pointed out the facts. Why even bother replying if you don't have anything helpful to post?

Believe what you want, I certainly won't be back to put you right - I have had enough of that already - you can only say it so many times. MSE forum is definately not the helpful place people think.

To those who have been helpful - thank you.

This newbie has the questions answered I fear that this is as far as we can go go . Any further posts will merely go into the rights and wrongs of this. This could cause discord and dis-harmony and whilst I am not suggesting that the OP is a troll, we might be better to leave this alone until the OP comes back to us with their decision or posts further posts on different threads.

OP - firstly you sais you would be moving in with granny and not paying her any rent or board. That means the taxpayer would be providing your accomodation, so are you really surprised people commented on that. And worse, not paying any board means granny pays all the bills too!

Anyway here are the rates for non-dependant deuctions which would apply (HB/CTB):
    not in paid work £7.40 / £2.30
in paid work whose gross weekly income
    is less than £116.00:
    £7.40 / £2.30
in paid work whose gross weekly income
    is between £116.00 and £171.99:
    £17.00 / £2.30
in paid work whose gross weekly income
    is between £172.00 and £222.99:
    £23.35 / £4.60
in paid work whose gross weekly income
    is between £223.00 and £295.99:
    £38.20 / £4.60
in paid work whose gross weekly income
    is between £296.00 and £368.99:
    £43.50 / £5.80
in paid work whose gross weekly income
    is £369.00 or more:
    £47.75 / £6.95

If you refuse / don't supply details of your income, they just use the top rate. If granny doesn't declare you as living there, she could get done for fraud and in some circumstances so could you.

Does grandma claim attendance allowance? This could alter the amount of non dependant charges made. You may not have to pay any.

    Hi MSK2110

Firstly welcome to the boards :o

Your grandmother is on means tested benefits which means that her HOUSEHOLD income is taken into account for all benefits such as council tax benefit, housing benefit etc. Her widows pension would not be affected unless she is getting an income support top up (if she is then this is also a means tested benefit).

So for both of you on full time jobs then that would mean that your wages would be accounted for into the household pot. With regards to the debt none of that will be taken into account, it is only your money going into the household that is assessed, otherwise the state would be paying for your debt and everyone would be on benefits.

I would suggest going onto www.entitledto.com and putting in all of the figures or going to see your local CAB and asking for a "better off" calculation. They can give you the current figures and how it will affect your grandmothers income, it may still be the case that it is cheaper for all three of you to live together as all of the bills etc will be split three ways. However as has been said if your grandmother rents her house from the council or registered social landlord it may be the case that she is not allowed to sublet and in letting you stay there for a year could cause her to be evicted from her home. You will need to check her rental agreement - in the event it does say that you can just apply to have your names added to the rent book so that it is all above board.

I just cannot understand how you can't see that if you live rent free in accommodation paid for by your Grandmother's HB that you will be gaining from the benefits system. Even if you pay the difference you will still be gaining from it, albeit legitimately. If you weren't gaining from it you wouldn't be doing it, would you?

You might have got a better response if you'd suggested that your grandmother might also be better off from the arrangement as well, for example by splitting the utility bills 3 ways. Unfortunately, all your posts have been about YOU and how you're going to be saving so much money. These have been the things that have annoyed so many of us and I just can't see how you can't understand this.

Also, money that is being used to pay off debts is still included in an assessment of your earnings.

If it was any other way it would disadvantage people who have budgetting carefully in the first place and not got into debt.
