Student Overdraft

Ok so I have a 0% overdraft with HSBC. I don't plan to go into it other than to put some in a savings account.

If I am all year round -£700 or whatever, will this affect my rating (internal) with HSBC?

I want to try and be good with them so I will be able to take out a decent mortgage with them (if they give me a good deal) when I am older.

I know its late at the moment so not expecting any big replies until tomorrow morning, thanks :)

i wouldn't expect HSBC to be giving a competitive mortgage anyway. the big banks don't tend to have the best offers. i don't know the answer to your question, but my guess would be that as long as there is activity in the account and you don't go over your limit, you should be ok. once you get to a graduate account, it might be more important. i've had a student account almost constantly since *cough* 1999, and natwest are still happy to throw credit and loans at me!

I'm deep in my Halifax overdraft but have a chunk of it saved in an account with them. They've just upped my CC limit so I guess they quite like me. My other current account is in a linked bank with them too.
See if you can find a decent savings account with HSBC or First Direct (I think that's the one they are linked to?) and keep it "in house".

  • I was in my overdraft with HSBC after my first year of university and stayed there until a couple of years after graduating. I also had a credit card with them but always paid off in full each month.

They approved me a mortgage on their graduate deals with no problem. I didn't go with them though because there were better deals elsewhere.
