Help please -Laptop motherboard needed

It seems my Hp Pavilion N5470 laptop video card has died. I've been advised by repairers that it's best/easiest to install a new motherboard.

Hp don't have any in stock and one repairer has quoted me £400 ( which probably exceeds the computer value) and another says it's impossible to get the motherboard.

Does anybody know of a supplier of such bits new or used? The local repairer say's if I can find the part he'll fit it.

I don't want to have to buy a new computer

Similar thing happened to me - I dropped my laptop, it landed on the usb cables sticking out the back and this pushed the usb pins back into the motherboard. Everything else worked fine but without any usb connections it was pretty useless. Acer also said that as the components are built into the mobo, you have to replace the whole mobo. Needless to say a new laptop only cost £600 so my insurance company decided it wasn't worth fixing.

So...I dont think your chances of getting a replacement mobo look too good I'm afraid to say.

Have you tried e-mailing the manufacturer? I did about my 3 year old Toshiba and was sent completely free of charge a new keyboard. And they sent it special delivery with such concise instructions that I was able to fit it myself.
Guess what manufacturer my new laptop will be from?

i've had the same sort of problem, for some unexplained reason my laptop systemboard has died and i have to pay £305 to get it fixed, i'm not too thrilled and i really can't afford to but a new one or even a new desktop. so i have pretty much resigned my self to having to get it fixed and paying for if, which sucks. as it has only just broken down 1 month afer the warranty expired.

  • It makes you wonder if sometimes manufacturers program these electronic items to expire shortly after the gaurantee finishes. ;)

I seem to remember reading somewhere that these sort of timed guarantees do not carry much weight under the trading standards act. That there is a bit that says that goods have to last and work properly for a reasonable amount of time. Might be worth looking into that aspect, and i am sure someone will be along who knows more about it than I do.
Must agree though that there seems to be built in obsolesence.
  • Your best bet is probably to look for the same model on eBay with a cracked screen - then you can try a "your life in their hands" transplant between the two to get a working one......

Depends on how keen you are to look at lots of very small screws on your dining room table :D

  • I am thinking just the same as honeymonster but it can be very hard to match the exact model. Unless it was a very popular notebook then i doubt there will be many available.

Personally i would rescue parts and sell them all seperatley on ebay, you might want to keep your HDD if you dont know how to wipe it. I would then buy something new and up to date.

How about looking at computer fairs or a little local computer shop, especially if it was a business laptop as this is where most them end up.
