Argh - eBay Goof!

I am such a gonk.

Sold a load of similar items, and sent the wrong item to the wrong buyer! Oh Noooo. Now I have a buyer who has paid waiting for an item I don't have to send, as I posted it today to the wrong buyer, and another buyer about to receive the wrong item, waiting for another one. Oh gawd.

I have sent a grovelly email to the one I have sent the item to asking him to send it back, and offering a big PayPal payment as apology for the c0ck up, and to cover mailing costs - hopefully he will help out........

Please tell me I am not the only one to goof like this - anyone?

(ps any other bright ideas on how to sort this mess out?)

  • I think you have done all you can do! I have never done this myself..but I have been sent the wrong item by someone so you are not alone! They did not offer any compensation so you are very fair - in fact I posted the item on to the correct person for them (and paid the postage) mmmm... perhaps I am too nice!
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

Ask the guy to post directly to the other buyer. Post the item out to the guy that received the wrong item and as you say cover his costs plus a bit more if you are generous. Nightmare!!

I've been on the receiving end - bought a DVD (slapshot2) and received Rugrats in Paris!!!!!!!!!. E mailed the seller to let him know and he sent me some stamps and I agreed to post to the correct recipient. Don't know if they watched Slaphot2 though ;-))

  • Luckily, the only item I sent someone in error was an unsold pair of school trousers which were similar to the ones I should have sent (but shorter). I sent the buyer the correct pair and told her to keep the other ones if they were any use to her family. Since the cost of postage was about the value of the secondhand trousers, there would have been little point in her sending them back, so I asked her, if she couldn't use them, to give them to a friend or to her local charity shop/jumble sale/school.

I did this twice during the years I sold on Ebay. It's so easily done if you are rushing to wrap & send out a few packages at a time.

With one pair of buyers the items were exchanged with no problem after I'd contacted them & asked them to post items on to the proper recipient with me refunding their p&p charges.

However, with the 2nd incident, one of the bidders denied she had received the item I'd sent in error, so I had to make a refund to the other buyer.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I did something similar whilst selling old books! i posted the wrong book to a buyer! i ended up posting the correct book and telling him to keep the other one as a gift because it wasnt worth the cost of sending it back! i lost out big time there really!

it happens a lot i think!

Phew! What a relief to know that I am not the only one lol. The buyer has been ace, and sent me an email saying no probs, human error, and he will forward it on - what a hero!

    Thanks for the reassurance.

I will write out a hundred times:

Must check who I am sending to
Must check who I am sending to.....
