advice please

I have just tried doing a comparison of fuel costs, however I owe on gas and electric so my current direct debit is not enough and my new one is to clear the debt, secondly our usage does not seem to be the same each bill so I am just wondering if anyone has any tips on the best way to complete the questions as accurately as possible, many thanks.
PS i am with BG for both gas and electric and was thinking of fixing it???

Use the units on your bill to work out what you are actually using over a year, and then put these details into the switching sites rather than what you're paying. It's a much more accurate way of doing it anyway.

If you're not sure how to do this, get out your latest bills or read your meter to get a current reading if that works better for the date of the old bills, then the ones from a year before. Subtract the number on the year-old ones from the number on the current ones, which gives you a years' consumption.

If you haven't kept the bills, sign up for online billing with BG and they may well put your old bills on there. It's worth doing this anyway, even if you're going to switch. And check what tariff you're on - if you're on their standard one, sign up to Click Energy 5 asap. It'll help pay the debt off quicker.

Make sure that you submit regular online meter readings (I suggest monthly, although some people might think it excessive), so that you know what you're using and the company can adjust your payment quickly if things change.

And finally, follow the tips on this forum, and the 'Green & Ethical' one about how to use less energy!
