Laptop packed up- melted!

Couple of weeks back, i noticed my laptop was heating up more than usual and becoming really slow. Last week it melted, and now keeps cutting out. In fact it wont even turn on any more!

The melting was underneath where the power cable plugs in, it's kind of bubbled a little. The actual metal bit that goes in has bent, and the bit it goes into looks scorched.

I know this doesn't sound good, but my question is- do you think it's completely had it or could it be fixed? If it could be fixed, how much might it cost?

The laptop is under 2 years old, and has previously worked fine. It has had daily use, but I look after it well. It's a hewlett packard intel notebook (I thought a decent make).

I don't know what I would do if it's completely kaput, not only can I not afford a new one, it's got all my files and photos on their that i'm now really concerned about.

Thanks for any words of wisdom!

(by the way am temporarily using my work laptop at home- thank goodness!)

There's no way of knowing what's wrong with it without opening it up and examining it. The bubbling of the plastic suggests that it got very hot, but that is only cosmetic damage. Without knowing what has been damaged internally, there's no way of saying how much it will cost to fix.

Best to take it to your local computer repairman and let them have a look at it.

    I tell you what...

This could be a fault with the laptop and you should contact HP telling them your laptop has done this as you think it is an fault with the electrics. If they don't comply go to the office of fair trading.

This shouldn't cost you a penny.

Another question from me is.... my brand new hp seems to be extremely hot a majority of the time and its usually on the side where the fan is etc.

Also, the plug transformer which is the big box of teh plug socket gets EXTREMELY HOT. anyone got any answers?

Should i take it back? This is a brand new laptop, should it get so hot even when it the laptop is not on charge?

anyone else have a hot laptop?

The transformer will hot, because of what its doing.
Try some temperature monitoring utilities. I use NHC for my laptop. Shows the temperatures, how much you are taxing it, and even lets you change the voltage (Don't touch if you don't know what you're doing). Though I've personally managed to undervolt my dell laptop - you give it less volts which means it runs cooler. But reduce it too much and it'll crash. Lowered the temps a couple of degrees, and slightly extended the battery life.
